Game play

Deal four cards to each player and deal four cards to the middle and spread them in a line, face-up. The traditional way to deal casino is two-by-two, to each player and the middle.

The first turn goes to the player to the left of the dealer and continues clockwise. Each player makes a play with one card from his hand in an attempt to capture as many cards as possible. The player must turn the card he plays face-up and place it on the table in view of all players before it is used to build or capture. The possible plays are as follows:

Capturing a card by pairing: A card from the player’s hand matches the rank (number) of a face-up card in the middle. The player places his card down and then collects the matching pair for counting at the end of the game.

Capturing cards by combining: A player can capture numerical cards (ace to 10 — not face cards) in combination if the value of the cards adds up to the value of a card in the player’s hand. For instance, a player with an 8 could capture a 6 and 2.

Capturing cards by pairing and combining: A player can execute the above two moves simultaneously if the middle cards support the maneuver. For example, if a player has a 9 and the board shows a 5, 4 and 9, then he may take the combination (5 and 4) and the pair (9) at once.

Building: A player may build a combination on a middle pile by adding one of the cards from his hand, if he has the card that the new combination will add up to. For example, if there is a 2 in the middle and a player has a 6 and 8 in his hand, he can place the 6 on the 2 and declare, “building eight.” the player who does this may not capture the cards from this build until his next turn. If any of the other players has an 8, he may steal this build before it gets back around to the original player. Face cards cannot be part of builds.

Building on builds: A player may build upon another player’s build if he has a card that will total the value of the three cards in the build. In the above example, a player with a 9 and ace could build ace, 6, and 2 and declare “building nine.” similarly, the player must wait a turn to capture this build if no other player does first.

Trailing: if a player cannot capture any cards, or for strategic reasons wants to lay off a card, he may play a card face-up in the middle. Other players may then capture or utilize this card.

The dealer replenishes the hands of the players after each round, but not the middle cards.

Objective

There are multiple ways to score points in casino. Generally, capturing many cards is a good way to end up with many points. Points are scored for having the following in your card pile:

Majority of cards (27 or more): 3 points
majority of spades (7 or more): 1 point
big casino (the 10♦): 2 points
little casino (the 2♠): 1 point
aces (each): 1 point

For the first two benchmarks, if no one achieves the minimum number, the points are not awarded. The first player to reach 21 points is the winner.

Casino

Casino, also spelled cassino, card game for two to four players, best played with two.

A 52-card deck is used. When two play, the dealer deals two cards facedown to the opponent, two cards faceup to the table, and two more facedown to himself and then repeats the process so that all have four cards. No further cards are dealt to the table.

The aim is to capture cards from the table, especially spades, aces, big casino (10 of diamonds), and little casino (2 of spades). A card played from the hand may capture by:

Cards may also be won by building; a card is played to the table to form an announced combination that can be captured by another hand card on the next turn—provided that the opponent does not capture the build first. For example, a player holding two 3s may add one of them to a 3 on the table and announce, “building 3s.” the build of 3s can subsequently be captured only by a 3, not by a 6. Or, holding a 3 and a 6, a player might play the 3 to a 3 on the table and announce, “building 6,” in which case the build can be captured only with a 6. A numerical build, however, can be extended. For example, the opponent, holding a 2 and an 8, could play the 2 to the two 3s (provided it was announced as 6 and not 3s) and announce, “building 8.” but no one may make a build without the relevant capturing card in hand.

Capturing all the cards on the table is called a sweep and earns a bonus point. The player indicates this fact by leaving the capturing card faceup in his pile of won cards. A player unable or unwilling to capture must trail—that is, play a card from hand to table and leave it there. It is not permissible to trail a card that can make a capture. Following a sweep, the next player can only trail.

Each time players run out of cards, the dealer deals four more cards to each until no cards remain in stock. When all cards have been played from hand and none remain in stock, the player who made the last capture adds to his won cards all the untaken table cards, but this does not count as a sweep unless it is one by definition.

Each player then scores what was won as follows: 1 point for each sweep, ace, and little casino, 2 points for big casino, 1 point for taking the most spades, and 3 points for taking the most cards (unless tied). Game is 11 or 21 points. Three- and four-handed casino games follow the same rules, with four playing in two partnerships.

Blackjack

Blackjack is by far the most popular casino card game. Almost everyone has either played blackjack or has seen it being played, but if you need a refresher here is a quick rundown on how to play.

Each player receives two cards and the dealer receives one card face down and one face up. Each player in turn then decides whether to stand pat, receive another card or cards (hit), split, double down or surrender (where available). Once all of the players have either busted (exceeded a total of 21) or stand the dealer flips their hole card over and completes his or her hand.

Dealers always hit when they have 16 or less and stand when they have 18 or more. Depending on the house rules, they always stand on hard 17’s but in some places they will hit on soft 17 and in others they will stand on soft 17.

This is just a basic overview, so if you want to play blackjack you should study the rules and table variations before investing a great deal of money. You can also play for free at most online casinos before playing for real money which is a great way to learn more about the game.

There are many different varieties of blackjack. A few of them are covered below, like spanish 21, but you will find 21 game variations in just about every casino. 3 card poker

3 card poker, also called tri card poker, is a game where you play a three card poker hand against the dealer’s three card hand. The dealer has to qualify with a queen high or better in order to pay off on the raise bet. To start play you place a bet on the ante circle. You also may place an optional wager on the pair+ circle. After you receive your three cards you either fold, which surrenders your ante bet, or you raise by placing a bet the same size as your ante bet in the raise circle.

If you raise and the dealer does not qualify you receive even money on your ante bet and the raise bet is a push. When you raise and the dealer qualifies and you have a better hand than the dealer your ante bet and the raise wager both receive even money. There are bonuses paid on your ante bet for certain hands.

A common pay table for ante bonuses is a straight pays 1 to 1, three of a kind pays 4 to 1 and a straight flush pays 5 to 1. The pair plus has different pay tables at different casinos, but a common one pays 1 to 1 for a pair, 4 to 1 for a flush, 6 to 1 for a straight, 25 to 1 for three of a kind and 35 to 1 for a straight flush.

4 card poker

4 card poker is played much like 3 card poker except the dealer always qualifies. The player receives five cards and the dealer receives six, with five down and one face up. Each forms his or her best four card poker hand.

The player antes to start play and must place another wager of one to three times the ante to remain in the hand after receiving his or her cards. Bonuses are paid for certain hands and there are side bets available.

Baccarat

Baccarat is a casino card game that is played for some of the highest stakes around the world. When you start playing baccarat you must place a bet on the banker, the player or a tie. After placing your bet all of the rest of the action is completed based on very strict rules, making this one of the easiest casino card games to play.

The object is to have the hand you bet on score a higher total than the other hand, or for the two hands to tie in the event you bet on a tie. Scores only go up to 9, as any digits in the tens column are dropped.

For example, a hand with a 10 and an 8 will score as an 8, not an 18. A hand containing an ace and 6 scores a total of 7.

Winning bets on the player pay 1 to 1 and winning bets on the banker pay 1 to 1 minus a small house commission, usually 5%. The tie bet usually pays 9 to 1, but it can vary.

Pai gow poker

In pai gow poker, the dealer and player each receive seven cards. These seven cards are divided into a five card poker hand and a two card hand. The five card hand has to be higher than the two card hand.

In order to win, the player’s five card hand has to be better than the dealer’s five card hand AND the player’s two card hand must be better than the dealer’s two card hand. When the player wins the casino collects a commission, usually 5%.

When both of the dealer’s hands are better than the players the player loses their wager. The outcome of the majority of hands is a push when the dealer has one better hand and the player has the other better hand.

Caribbean stud poker

Caribbean stud poker is a popular casino card game that usually has a side progressive jackpot wager available. Players start by placing an ante wager and the optional progressive side bet if they want. The player and dealer each receive five cards with only one of the dealers turned face up.

The player then either folds or raises. A raise is twice the amount of the original ante. The dealer only qualifies with a hand of ace king or higher. If the dealer does not qualify all ante bets are paid even money and all raises are pushed.

When the dealer qualifies and the player has a better hand both the ante and raise bets win for the player. The ante bet pays 1 to 1 and the raise wager is paid from a chart.

A common pay out chart is 1 to 1 for a pair or less, 2 to 1 for two pair, 3 to 1 for three of a kind, 4 to 1 for a straight, 5 to 1 for a flush, 7 to 1 for a full house, 20 to 1 for four of a kind, 50 to 1 for a straight flush and 100 to 1 for a royal flush.

Let it ride

Let it ride poker is a version of five card stud where each player receives three cards and two cards are turned face up on the table. The two face up cards are used in combination with each player’s three cards to form their best poker hand.

Players do not play against the dealer. They are paid based on a pay table starting with a pair of tens or better.

Each player starts by placing three equal sized wagers. After they receive their three cards they may pull one wager back or let it ride. After the first face up card is dealt they can pull a bet back or let it ride.

So the player will always have at least one wager on the table at the end and may have up to three. A common pay table pays 1 to 1 for a pair of tens or better, 2 to 1 for two pair, 3 to 1 for three of a kind, 5 to 1 for a straight, 8 to 1 for a flush, 11 to 1 for a full house, 50 to 1 for four of a kind, 200 to1 for a straight flush and 1,000 to 1 for a royal flush.

Spanish 21

Spanish 21 is played like regular blackjack but all of the 10s have been removed from the deck. So instead of a 52 card deck you use a 48 card deck. Almost all of the other rules are favorable to the player so if you learn correct strategy the house edge on spanish 21 can actually be lower than on most blackjack games. Casino war

Casino war is one of the easiest games you will ever play. You place a bet and receive a card face up. The dealer then receives a card face up. The higher card wins.

If you win you get paid even money and if you lose you surrender your entire wager. In the event of a tie you can either fold and get back half your bet or double your bet and go to war.

The war round has the player and dealer each receive four down cards and then a face up card. The higher face up card wins. If the dealer wins you lose your entire wager. If you win then you receive even money on half your bet and the other half is a push.

Super fun 21

Super fun 21 is a variation of blackjack. It is played just like blackjack but only pays even money on a player’s blackjack. Other rules are more favorable to the player like the ability to double down at any time during the hand, being able to split up to four times and a player blackjack always wins even when the dealer also has a blackjack.

Vegas three card rummy

In vegas three card rummy the goal is to get a lower score than the dealer. The player and the dealer each receive three cards and the total is calculated for each hand. The dealer must score 20 or lower to qualify.

The player must place an ante bet to start and place an additional wager to stay in the hand after they receive their cards. There is also a side bonus bet that can be wagered on. When the player stays in the hand and has less than the dealer he or she receives even money on their ante.

When the player stays in and the dealer qualifies and the player has a lower score than the dealer the player wins 4 to 1 on a score of 0, 2 to 1 on a score of 1 to 5 and 1 to 1 on a score of 6 to 19.

Card values for face cards and tens are 10, aces are 1 and all other cards are their face value. Pairs, triples, two card suited runs and three card suited runs count as 0.

Texas holdem

Texas holdem, along with the next two games (omaha and 7 card stud), are not always included in a list of casino card games even though they are often offered in the poker section of land based casinos. They usually aren’t offered in the same software package as online casinos, though many online casinos also have poker rooms offered on different software. So I decided to include the three main poker variations here at the end because they do fit the overall theme.

Texas holdem is the most popular version of poker and is often the game you see televised. Play starts with two players placing small forced bets called the blinds. Each player receives two hole cards face down and then there is a round of betting.

Three community cards are placed face up in the middle of the table followed by another betting round. Another community card is turned face up followed by another round of wagering and then the final community card is turned face up.

The final round of betting is completed and the remaining players make their best five card poker hand using any combination of their hole cards and the five community cards. You can play texas holdem for limit, pot limit or no limit.

Omaha

Omaha is played almost exactly like texas holdem except each player starts with four cards instead of two and at the end each remaining player must use exactly two of his or her four hole cards and exactly three cards from the board to make the best five card hand. Omaha can be played as limit or pot limit and can also be played for high and low.

7 card stud

7 card stud starts with each player placing an ante and receiving two cards face down and one card face up followed by a betting round. The fourth, fifth and sixth cards are dealt to each player face up followed by betting rounds and then the seventh and final card is dealt face down to each player followed by the final betting round. 7 card stud is played for limit or pot limit stakes and is usually just played for high, but can be played for high and low.

Casino card games: which one has the best odds?

Card games have always been favorites among casino players, and blackjack has led the way as the most popular table game for more than 50 years.

Which turn of the cards gives you the best odds to win? Let’s take a look at half a dozen games from two standpoints: the house edge and how much opportunity the games give players to improve their chances of beating the house.

BLACKJACK ODDS

The house edge: the house had an edge because you have a chance to bust and lose before the dealer plays his hand. Both dealer and player bust on about 8% of hands, and if there were no other factors, the house would have about an 8% edge.

The rules give part of that back to players by paying 3-2 on blackjacks in the best games or 6-5 in games that are worse for you.

Opportunity to improve: blackjack gives you the biggest chance to improve your shot to win of any casino card game. You don’t have mimic the dealer. You can find the optimal plays for hitting, standing, splitting pairs and doubling down on basic strategy charts.

With basic strategy, the house edge can be reduced to less than 1%, the precise edge depending on house rules such as how many decks are in use and whether the dealer hits or stands on soft 17. For example, in a six-deck game in which the dealer hits soft 17 and you are allowed to double down on any first two cards, including after splitting pairs, basic strategy players face a house edge of about 0.6%. With favorable rules, some blackjack games have house edges of less that 0.2%.

Skilled card counters can go a step farther and get an edge over the house, but counting cards usually is not possible online where it is common for every deal to come from a freshly shuffled deck.

BACCARAT ODDS

The house edge: two hands are dealt, and you have three options: bet on the banker hand, bet on the player hand, or bet the hand will be a tie.

If you bet on banker or player, ties are pushes. Rules are set so banker wins more than player, but it’s close. Banker wins 45.9% of hands, player wins 44.6%, and 9.5% are ties.

Because banker wins more than it loses in baccarat, the house charges a 5% commission on winning banker bets. That gives the house edge a 1.06% edge. There is no commission on player bets, where there is a 1.24% edge.

Both of those are among the better bets in the house, but don’t bet on ties. The house edge there is 14.4%.

Opportunity to improve: all decisions on whether to draw a third card to the two-card starting hands are automatic under set rules. You make no hit/stand decisions and can’t change the odds. Your impact on your own chance to win comes from deciding whether to bet banker or player, while ignoring the tie bet.

CASINO HOLD’EM ODDS

The house edge: as in many poker-based table games, in casino hold'em you start with an ante and later make an additional bet if you like your cards. But if the dealer doesn’t have a qualifying and of at least a pair of 4s, and the bet is a push.

Players who either fold too often instead of following their ante with a bet face or who are too aggressive and make that bet even with weak cards might face a house edge of 3 to 4%, but you can improve that.

Opportunity to improve: there are so many variables in seven-card poker games that no one has yet devised a strategy chart for casino hold’em. There is a strategy calculator in which you can choose individual hands around the web.

In general, you should follow your ante with a bet and stay in action on all but the worst 18% of hands. If your first two cards are low and unpaired – meaning the dealer probably has stronger hole cards – then you’d fold. Exception: even with low hole cards, you’d stay in action if they mesh with the community cards for a strong chance at a straight or flush.

With optimal strategy for staying in the hand, you can reduce the house edge to about 2.2%.

3 CARD POKER ODDS

The house edge: as in casino hold’em, there is a dealer qualifying hand. In three card poker, it’s a queen or better – if the dealer doesn’t have at least a queen, you’re paid only on your ante and not on your bet.

If you followed your ante with a bet and stayed in every hand, you could face a house edge in excess of 5% the ante. Both your ante and bet are at risk against the dealer’s best hands, but when the dealer hand is weak and doesn’t qualify, only your ante is paid.

There is another three card poker option, pair plus, in which you are paid according to a pay table without having to beat the dealer. At the most common pay table, the pair plus house edge is 7.28%.

Opportunity to improve: you can’t improve your odds in pair plus, but there is a basic strategy for three card poker that helps in the ante-bet portion of the game.

If you make the bet only with queen-6-4 or better, you reduce the house edge to 3.37% of your ante, or 2.01% of total action once ante and bet are both taken into account.

VIDEO POKER ODDS

The house edge: video poker is based on five-card draw poker. You don’t have to beat a dealer. Your hand just has to fall on a pay table that usually starts with getting your money back on a pair of jacks or better and rises to a 4,000-coin bonanza for a five-coin bet when you get a royal flush.

The house edge is dependent on both your strategy for drawing cards and on the pay table of the game you’re playing. Even on a favorable game such as 9-6 jacks or better, an average player can face a house edge of 3% or more if they don’t know proper strategy.

Opportunity to improve: seek out the games with the best pay tables. Usually, that means checking the payouts on full houses and flushes. There are many video poker themes, each with its own pay tables and strategies, but let’s use jacks or better as an example. If you can find 9-6 jacks or better games where full houses pay 9-for-1 and flushes 6-for-1, you’re playing a higher-paying game than jacks or better with an 8-5 or 7-5 pay table.

With optimal play, 9-6 jacks or better pays 99.5%, compared to 97.3 for the 7-5 version or 96.2 on 6-5. That’s equivalent to a 0.5% house edge on the 9-6 jacks version.

MISSISSIPPI STUD ODDS

The house edge: there is no dealer hand to beat in mississippi stud, a five-card game in which you ante, see your own two cards, then may bet one-to-three times your ante after your cards, and again after seeing the first and second of the three community cards. If you don’t bet at any of those points, you must fold and lose your bets up to that point.

Payoffs are made according to a pay table that starts at a push for a pair of 6s through 10s and advances up to 500-1 on a royal flush.

The house edge derives from the pay table, and is highly variable according to your bet patterns, but can reach 10% or more of your ante if you make poor decisions.

Opportunity to improve: with multiple opportunities to bet, basic strategy is more involved than in three card poker but not as complex as casino hold’em.

With that strategy, the house edge is 4.91% of the ante or 1.37% of total action, including both analysis and bets.

SUMMARY

The most popular table game is still the best opportunity for players who put in the time to learn basic strategy. Video poker also is a game where those in the know can reduce the house edge to less than 1%, but the pay tables that make that possible are becoming less and less common.

But the other card games here have reasonable house edges and all but baccarat have elements of skill. And for a game requiring no skill and no learning curve, baccarat has about as low a house edge as you’ll find.

The 10 best games in the casino

There’s bound to be a lot of disagreement about what the 10 best games in the casino are. After all, different gamblers have different temperaments. I might enjoy playing blackjack because I count cards, while you might play slot machines because you don’t want to have to think about what you’re doing.

But some games are just too good a deal to pass up, while others are really awful. Some games are boring for almost everyone. Some just have terrible odds. And some games qualify for this top list if you make certain bets but not if you make others.

All that being said, don’t let anyone judge you based on what casino games you enjoy. I’m offering my opinions below, but yours might differ. Everyone has his or her own reason for gambling in a casino.

At the end of the day, all casino games favor the house. How much of a favorite the house is doesn’t matter as much as you might think. After all, if you play a negative expectation game long enough, you’ll lose all your money—no matter whether the game is on this list or its companion, “the 10 worst games in the casino”.

The games are listed in no particular order:

1. Blackjack

Not everyone likes blackjack. In fact, I’m going to start off by listing some of the downsides to playing blackjack. I’ll get into the reasons why it’s on this “best of” list after I’ve admitted to the game’s flaws.

Blackjack is not a good game for introverts unless you can find a table where no one else is playing. Even then, you’re still going to interact with a live human dealer—unless you’re playing online. But human interaction is almost always a given with a blackjack game.

Also, some people just don’t like card games. Maybe they didn’t play cards when they were growing up or something, so they don’t know much about how they work. Some people just don’t like math at all, even simple addition, and blackjack just becomes incomprehensible really quickly because of all the addition and subtraction.

Finally, some players don’t want to have to make decisions. Blackjack is most certainly a game of decisions, and what you decide has an effect on your outcome. A lot of the other players at the table think that what you decide has an effect on their outcome, too.

They’re wrong about that, but for an introvert who doesn’t want to make decisions and also doesn’t want to deal with other people, blackjack might be one of the worst games in the casino.

Blackjack has the lowest house edge in the casino. The house edge is the percentage of each bet that the casino expects to keep over the long run—thousands of bets. The higher the house edge is, the worse the odds are for the player.

If you find a game with a good set of rules, and if you play using basic strategy, the house edge might be under 0.3%. That’s the lowest house edge in the casino usually. Sure, you might sometimes find a video poker game with a comparable number, but even the best video poker games only tie blackjack when it comes to offering the player great odds.

Even blackjack games where the game conditions are less than favorable offer better odds than most casino games. The worst blackjack games usually have a house edge of around 1%.

Basic strategy refers to the correct decision for every potential hand in blackjack. You compare the total in your hand with the dealer’s up card, and there is one decision with the best expected value. If you make that decision every time, you’re using basic strategy.

Expected value is a mathematical term that expresses how much a particular decision is worth over the long run. You multiply the odds of winning by the amount you stand to win and subtract the odds of losing multiplied by the amount you stand to lose.

Luckily, you don’t have to figure out the correct basic strategy for yourself on every single hand. You can find detailed guides to basic strategy right here on our site. You can even print up a table to take into the casino, and the dealers will even let you use that printout while you play.

Even if you ignore basic strategy and just follow your hunches, you’re only losing between 1.5% and 3.5% per hand—unless you’re just making purposefully boneheaded decisions, that is. If you hit every hand until you bust, the house edge is 100%.

Another great thing about blackjack is that it’s one of the only gambling games where a talented, smart player can get an edge. Counting cards is the best known advantage gambling technique used in blackjack, but there are several other ways of getting an edge over the house.

Blackjack is a great game, and even if it’s not your go-to game at the casino, it should be on the menu of games that you choose from. It’s just a lot of fun, and the odds are some of the best in the casino.

2. Video poker

Video poker games resemble slot machines, but they offer players much better odds of winning. And getting better odds of winning is something everyone should be interested in.

As with blackjack, I’m going to look at the pros and cons of this game versus other games. I’ll start with its drawbacks.

If you’re a social gambler, video poker might not be the best choice. You don’t generally interact much with other players when you’re sitting in front of a jacks or better machine.

Also, if you’re a high roller or a low roller, video poker might not be available in the denominations you’re looking for. The lowest end video poker games cost $1.25 per hand to play (25 cents with a max bet of 5 coins), and even the highest end video poker games top out at less than most whales want to play.

Finally, video poker is a game that rewards skilled play. This is just too much pressure for some players. The idea is that they’ve come to the casino in order to relax, not to think about what they’re doing.

But the pros of video poker outweigh the cons in a significant way.

The main reason is that the odds are so much better. It’s also a much more transparent game.

A video poker game uses a random number generator that duplicates the kinds of odds you’d see if you were playing with a real deck of cards. That means if you need an ace to fill your straight, you can calculate the odds of getting that card. There are 4 aces in the deck—no more, no less.

With a slot machine, you have NO way of knowing what the likelihood of getting a particular symbol on a particular reel is. A cherry might be programmed to come up once every 10 spins, or it might be programmed to come up once every 100 spins. You have no way to know.

As a result, the payback percentage for a video poker machine can be calculated. You’re just multiplying the odds of achieving each hand by the payout for that hand. The payback percentage for a slot machine can be calculated, too. But not by you. You don’t have access to the information you need, and you’ll never be able to get access to it.

The best video poker games, like full pay jacks or better, offer a payback percentage of over 99% when played with appropriate strategy. Most slot machines, on the other hand, offer a payback percentage of 95% or much less.

Even video poker games with less than ideal pay tables pay more than slots. Even the worst jacks or better games, like the ones you’ll find at the airport, have a payback percentage north of 94%. Compare that with the slot machines there, which often have a payback percentage of 75% to 80%.

Having to learn how to use a little bit of strategy in order to get these better odds isn’t too big a drawback, either. In fact, for players with my temperament, learning strategy is fun. I like having some control over my destiny, even if I can’t turn the odds to my favor. I still want to get as much gambling for my money as possible, and I don’t mind making the effort to get there.

3. Craps

Craps might be the most intimidating game in the casino. You have lots of people standing around the table, the bets all have funny names, and you even need an entire crew of people just to run a single game.

I’ll start again with the drawbacks to craps, but I’m a firm believer that this is one of the best casino games for anyone, no matter what their level of experience is.

The first drawback is that the gameplay is actually a little bit complicated and hard to follow, especially if you’ve never played before. This is a game with a lot moving parts, but at the end of the day, it all boils down to someone shooting dice and hoping to get certain numbers.

It’s just that there’s a difference between the come-out roll and the subsequent rolls when the player is trying to make a point. Heck, even some of the bets on the table aren’t labeled.

Another drawback is that the game is as streaky as a casino game can be. You can easily lose hundreds of dollars at the craps table in a matter of moments. That’s a two-edged sword, though, as you can also win hundreds of dollars really fast, too.

Finally, some of the bets at the craps table offer some of the worst odds in the casino. The house edge for some of these bets is over 10%, in fact. But that’s not such a big drawback, either, as it’s pretty easy to choose the better bets.

Here are the advantages to craps:

Once you learn how to play, it’s not that hard at all. There are only 2 dice in use, and there is only one shooter at a time. And the shooter’s goal is simple enough—she wants to roll a 7 or an 11 on the come-out roll, and she wants to avoid rolling a 2, 3, or 12.

If she rolls any other number, she’s set a point. Her goal then changes. She now wants to roll the point before rolling a 7.

The simplest bet at the table is a bet on whether or not the shooter is going to succeed or fail. This bet is called the pass/don’t pass bet, but subsequent bets also have a come/don’t come option, which treats those subsequent rolls as new come-out rolls.

But the game also offers the only bet in the casino which has a 0 house edge. This is called an odds bet. When a point is set, you can place an additional bet behind your original pass or don’t pass bet. This bet is a multiple of your original bet, and the maximum amount you can bet on this option is pre-determined by the casino.

But since this bet pays out at the actual odds of it being won, it’s a bet with a 0% house edge. This hedges your risk in a dramatic way. The more money the casino lets you place on the odds bet, the better your odds become.

It’s also easy to avoid the high house edge bets. Just stick with the simple bets on the table and avoid the ones that seem complicated. If you stick with pass/don’t pass, come/don’t come, and odds bets, you’ll be facing a house edge of around 1% or less. That puts this game on a par with blackjack.

But unlike blackjack, you don’t have to know any kind of strategy when you play craps. The only strategy for this game is to avoid the bets which have a high house edge and focus on the bets with a low house edge.

Craps is also one of the most social games in any casino. People are jumping up and down, yelling, and giving each other high fives constantly.

I mentioned earlier that the game is, by its nature, streaky. That’s a feature, not a drawback. Few gambling experiences are more exciting than getting involved with a craps table with a hot shooter.

And if you think the game is too intimidating, look for the casino game class schedule at the casino. Almost all casinos offer these in the mornings and in the afternoons. Once you’ve taken one of these classes, you’ll be able to play craps as if you were an old pro.

4. Baccarat

I’ll admit that baccarat isn’t one of my personal favorites, but it’s been a favorite of casino high rollers for decades—maybe even longer. It has advantages and disadvantages over other card games in the casino, but one of the biggest advantages the game offers is its relatively low house edge.

You don’t make any decisions when playing baccarat. This isn’t like blackjack at all, really—the only thing the games have in common is that they’re dealt from a traditional deck of cards.

This game is perfect for high rollers, as the stakes are generally available. It’s also perfect for players who aren’t looking for something especially fast paced. It’s a leisurely game that offers a certain amount of elegance.

It’s also a good game for players who don’t want to learn a strategy and who aren’t interested in trying to get an edge over the casino. Baccarat is not as streaky as craps, but players can get on a winning streak without too much trouble.

5. Slot machines

I probably sounded pretty down on slot machines when I wrote about video poker earlier, but the reality is that for the right type gambler, slot machines are an excellent choice. But not all slot machine games are created equally.

Slot machines are the right games for people who aren’t interested in socializing with other gamblers. They’re also the right games for players who don’t want to make decisions. You put your money in, you spin the reels, and you accept your luck. That’s just how they work, and that appeals to a lot of people.

The best slot machines are the ones played at the higher denominations. If you look at any table comparing payout percentages at the various denominations, you’ll see that the higher denomination games always have the best payouts. That doesn’t mean you should play above your bankroll, though.

Here’s how the math of that works out:

You make 600 spins per hour on a $5 slot machine. That’s $3000 in action, and if you’re losing 5% on average, then you’re looking at an expected loss of $150 per hour.

You trade up to a $25 game, so now you’re putting $15,000 per hour into action. But now you’re only losing 4% on average, because the payout percentage is better. That’s an expected loss of $600 per hour.

Even if the payout percentage dropped to 3%, you’re looking at an expected loss of $450, which is still triple what you’d lose on the$5 game.

So it’s not all about payback percentage. The stakes for which you’re playing also make a big difference.

Another consideration is how complicated the game is. The general rule of thumb is that the payback percentage on the simpler games is higher than for the more complicated games. A 3 reel slot machine almost always has a better payout percentage than that of a 5 reel slot machine. A slot machine with a flat top jackpot almost always has a better payout percentage than that of a progressive jackpot machine.

So if you’re an introvert who’s not interested in making decisions, give the slots a try. Just stay within your budget and stick with the simpler, more traditional games. Slot machines get a bad rap, but that’s a little undeserved.

6. European roulette

In general, roulette gets a bad rap among so-called sophisticated gamblers. They cite the lack of a skill element and the high house edge for the game. But somehow roulette has managed to remain popular for centuries.

One reason is because the relatively high house edge is mitigated by the pace at which it is played.

Consider this. European roulette, which only has a single 0, has a house edge of 2.7%. Let’s say you found a really great slot machine that also has a house edge of only 2.7%.

Most roulette tables probably don’t see 60 bets per hour—less if the table is crowded. Suppose you’re betting $5 per spin of the wheel. That’s only $300 that you’re putting into action each house. With a 2.7% house edge, you’re looking at an expected hourly loss of $8.10.

Say you play that really good slot machine for $5 per spin. You’re looking at 600 spins per hour, which amounts to $3000 in action. Remember we said that it had the same house edge, too? Now you’re expected hourly loss is $81.

You’ll notice that I specified european roulette on this list. American roulette is going to make my list of worst casino games. That’s because the house edge for american roulette is almost twice as high as for european roulette, and there’s no advantage to playing it. The game simply has worse odds for the player.

Not all casinos have european roulette. My recommendation is to just skip roulette if the only version you can find is american roulette. There are other options with much better odds which suit similar temperaments—baccarat is one choice that might work well for you.

If enough gamblers start ignoring the american roulette wheels, the casinos might start putting in more european wheels.

7. Pai gow poker

I love pai gow poker for multiple reasons, but the main reasons have to do with the pacing. It’s a leisurely game. In that respect, it resembles roulette or baccarat. But the game also presents opportunities for pushes on a consistent basis, which lowers your expected hourly loss even further.

Like craps, though, pai gow poker can be intimidating for beginners. I’ll make the same recommendation for this game that I made for craps—take one of the classes that the casinos offer for free. This game is fun enough and offers a good enough deal that it’s worth learning how to play.

Pai gow poker is played with a 53 card deck—it includes a joker as a wild card. Like blackjack, it’s a house-banked game. So it’s a “casino poker” game rather than a “real” poker game. In casino poker, players only compete with the dealer’s hand. In real poker games, the dealer doesn’t usually even have a hand, and all the players compete with each other.

The gimmick is that each player gets a 7 card hand. You’re required to set that hand into 2 hands—a 2 card hand and a 5 card hand. The dealer has to do the same, but the dealer has to do so in a prescribed way. (this is another similarity to blackjack.)

If the player’s 2 hands are better than the dealer’s 2 hands, he wins even money less a 5% commission. If the dealer’s 2 hands are better than the player’s 2 hands, the player loses his bet. Other outcomes result in a push, which happens more often than you probably think.

This game does require a certain amount of strategy, because you do have to make decisions about which cards to put in the 5 card hand and which cards to put in the 2 card hand. If you enjoy the mental challenge of making decisions that affect your bottom line, then pai gow poker, like blackjack or video poker, is probably a good choice for you.

The house edge for this game is only about 1.5%, which isn’t as good as blackjack, but it’s still a great gamble. Even players on a budget can usually afford this because of the leisurely rate of play and the plentiful pushes.

8. Spanish 21

Some people consider spanish 21 just a blackjack game with some rules differences. They’re not wrong about this, necessarily, but I think that the rules changes are significant enough that spanish 21 deserves to be listed as its own game. It has most of the same pros and cons as blackjack.

Here are some of the differences between spanish 21 and standard blackjack:

Spanish 21 uses a “spanish deck”, which is a deck of playing cards with all of the 10s removed. This confused me the first time I read it, but I later realized that the face cards were still in the deck. It was literally just the cards with the number 10 on them that had been removed.

Late surrender, which is not available in most blackjack games, is always available in spanish 21. Doubling after splitting is also always allowed in spanish 21—most traditional blackjack games have limits to this, if they allow it at all. Aces can be re-split, too, which is also unusual in traditional blackjack games.

One of the other advantages a player gets in spanish 21 is that a total of 21 for the player ALWAYS wins, regardless of the dealer’s total. That’s a huge difference right there. This includes blackjacks on both the dealer’s and the player’s side—the player always wins one of these ties.

Spanish 21 also has several bonuses for various hands. A 5 card hand totaling 21, for example, pays off at 3 to 1. A 6 card hand totaling 21 pays off at 2 to 1. 7 cards or more with a total of 21 pays off at 3 to 1.

A 678 or a 777 also gets a bonus payout—3 to 2. But if the cards are suited, the payout is increased to 2 to 1. And if the suit is spades, the payoff is increased again, this time to 3 to 1.

Like regular blackjack, players who are willing to learn and implement basic strategy are able to reduce the house edge dramatically. The house edge for spanish 21 never goes above 1% as long as you use basic strategy, and under ideal conditions, the house edge is only 0.4%,

Spanish 21 is often a better game than blackjack, although the rules variations do mean you have to adjust your strategy in some significant ways. Still, it’s worth learning how to play. It’s often the best bet, mathematically, out of all the bets available in any given casino.

9. 3 card poker

3 card poker makes the list not because of its low house edge but because it’s so much fun. In fact, 3 card poker has some of the worst odds of any game on this list. But the odds aren’t terrible, and the game has some other perks which might make up for the relatively high house edge in some ways.

I mentioned earlier that there’s a difference between a traditional poker game and a casino poker game. That’s because in traditional poker you’re competing with the other players. In a casino poker game, the house is banking all the action. It’s like blackjack—you only have to beat the dealer; you don’t have to beat the other players at the table.

Of course, in a poker game with only 3 cards, the odds of getting certain hands change quite a bit. That’s part of the fun of this game. It’s easier to get a straight, a flush, or a straight flush when you only have to get 3 cards to match.

Here’s a look at the probability behind that.

Suppose you want to determine the probability of getting a flush. In probability terms, this is an “AND” question. The 2 nd card needs to be of the same suit as the 1 st card, AND the 3 rd card has to match those suits, too.

In probability, when the question uses the word “and”, you multiply the probabilities of the separate outcomes by each other to get your overall probability.

To keep things simple, I’m going to estimate these odds without taking into account the cards that have already been dealt. There are 4 suits, so the probability of getting a card of any particular suit is ¼.

¼ X ¼ is 1/16, which is a reasonable approximation of your odds of getting a flush in 3 card poker.

In a 5 card poker game, the odds would look like this, instead:

That’s an order of magnitude in difference.

The bottom line is that you’ll see bigger hands more often in 3 card poker, and that’s just more fun. Of course, your hand still has to beat the dealer’s hand in order to win.

The house edge for 3 card poker is around 3.3%, making it a worse bet than european roulette, but not by much. It’s also a considerably better bet than american roulette, which has a house edge of 5.26%.

10. Caribbean stud poker

Caribbean stud poker is another house-banked poker game, but this one offers a progressive jackpot. I recommended avoiding slot machine games with progressive jackpots earlier, because they offer worse odds to the players. If you’re looking for a fun game where you get a shot at a big prize, caribbean stud poker is a good place to look.

Also, caribbean stud poker is a game in which you can socialize with other players. I’m not a fan of gambling alone, although I know some people prefer slot machines and video poker because they ARE fans of gambling alone. As shakespeare said in hamlet, “to thine own self be true.”

The house edge on this game is relatively high, about the same as that for roulette. So on our list of best casino games, this is the worst of the bunch. I wouldn’t recommend this at all if it weren’t for the fun factor and the potential progressive jackpot.

This is also a game that rewards strategy, but the strategy for playing is more complicated than just learning basic strategy in blackjack. This is a plus and a minus.

I enjoy a challenge. Learning a complicated strategy for a game is entertaining to me.

But why would I want to spend my time learning a strategy for a game with a house edge that’s 10 times as high as that of blackjack? I could just use that that time learning basic blackjack strategy and enjoy a much better house edge.

The truth is that it’s all about the progressive jackpot. Most blackjack games don’t offer a progressive jackpot, and sometimes I just want to dream about the big score. And you can’t ever get a big score if you don’t play a game where a big score is available.

Heck, even if you don’t hit the progressive, some of the hands pay out at 100 to 1 or 50 to 1. You won’t see that at the blackjack table, either.

Conclusion

What constitutes a casino game in the “best of class” category is largely a matter of personal preference. You know your goals as a casino gambler better than I ever could. Beware of people offering blanket black and white advice about which casino games are better than others and why.

A lot of these gambling pundits base all their advice on one factor—the house edge. As factors go, that isn’t a bad one, but it’s not the only thing most people consider—or even SHOULD consider—when choosing a casino game to play.

You should also think about whether you’re an introvert or an extrovert. You should think about whether you like fast paced game or slow paced games. Would you prefer to have frequent small wins, or do you prefer to go for a big jackpot?

All of these are factors that you can and should take into consideration when choosing a casino game. The games on this list represent my favorites more than anything else, although I tried to provide objective reasons for the inclusion of each on this list.

Pretty good version of the game, but with a couple of problems. Complaints by other reviewers about not being able to build are wrong, they just haven’t figured out how to do it: to start a build you have to tap a card on the table first instead of one from your hand. (of course it would help if there were a “how to play” file to explain this, which there isn’t; I had to discover it for myself by trial and error.)

Scoring is wrong, or at least not what I’m used to. The way I’ve always played, it’s 3 points for cards, 1 for spades, 2 for the ♢10, 1 each for aces and the ♠︎2. This version scores only 1 for cards, 3 for the ♢10, and 2 for the ♠︎2; makes the strategy a bit different. I also play that you get an extra point for a sweep (picking up the last card on the board, leaving the table empty); this version doesn’t do that.

Other problems: there is no command menu for stuff like quitting or starting a new game; only way to start over is to close and reopen the app. I have had it freeze on me a couple of times (not often). And the “you win”/“you lose” cartoon at the end is really ugly (see screen shot above). So there are problems, but still not a bad implementation and fun to play.

Brings back the good old days ��

I wish I’d thought to look for this casino card game app ages ago. The play is quite smooth. The computer is smart without being too smart. It seems to be getting smarter? Maybe it figures your level and plays to your skills? That seems a little too complicated for an amusement like this but it “feels” like that’s the case. Anyway, I’ve just been playing for an hour or so. It’s very nostalgic and I’m having a good time. It’s nice that the ads are banners too, instead of interrupting the game play. Maybe move the banner to the top cause I keep bumping it by accident. That’s a bit annoying but I’m learning to avoid it. And it’d be nice if I could change my mind on more of the plays and the computer shouldn’t jump the gun when I’m building. But I think there’s a way to avoid that if I play in the right sequence. Still figuring it out. So far though, the app seems very well crafted for such a variable game. Well done! Thanks!

The last updates really made things a little more difficult.
The cards flash in and out when played, you have to click whether to pickup, cancel build, you can not select the card backs, the one that is on there now, is lame and this sliding action instead of clicking the card has become harder when you think your playing one way and it closes for you. I have played this game since the sixties and it is played differently.
