Slots features
With so many games online, it's important to hunt out slots that have features you enjoy. Just because features are present, it doesn't mean the slots are likely to pay out more. Paylines are the winning combinations of symbols that award payouts. While classic online slots used to make do with 1-3 paylines, modern online slots can boast anywhere from 10, 15 and 25 paylines to 243, 720 and 1,024 paylines. Typically, paylines pay from left-to-right, starting with the first reel, and usually pay for two or three symbols in a row. However, "multi-way" slots can pay right-to-left too to bump up the payline total.
Wilds are classic symbols that you'll find in thousands of modern online slots. Wilds are symbols that substitute for all other symbols on the reels to help form winning combinations. Typically, wilds won't substitute for scatters or bonus icons (see below) but they can still bump up your bankroll if there are a lot on the reels. Wilds usually have a big jackpot attached if you line up five on a payline.
- Expanding wilds: are special symbols used by some developers in their slots. When they appear, expanding wilds stretch down across all the rows to form a single image. In doing so they increase your winnings.
- Stacked wilds: are wild symbols that appear on top of each other on a reel. Typically, stacked wilds appear in threes to fill a whole reel and help players bump up their winnings. Stacked wilds can also appear heavily in some slots' free spins bonuses.
- Sticky wilds: are symbols that stay in place for the next spin. When that happens, the reels and symbols spin while the sticky wilds stay where they are. This can often lead to consecutive wins for players.
- Shifting wilds: (similar to sticky wilds) remain on the reels for another spin but will "shift" reels inbetween spins. Shifting wilds might stay on the reels until they've worked their way across the reels from left-to-right. Once they've appeared on reel 5 they move right and disappear. The slot then continues as normal.
- Transferring wild: another popular feature of WMS (williams) online slots, is a special wild that replicates itself across the reels. If one wild appears it may repeat on adjacent reels or change a set of symbols into wilds. This, of course, can lead to some pretty big cash wins.
One of the most popular in-game slots bonuses is the free spins feature. Usually, free spins are triggered by landing three or more scatter icons anywhere on the reels. Bonus features vary from developer to developer, but usually a set amount of free spins will be awarded with a prize multiplier attached to each winning spin. RTP (return to player percentage)

Cascading wilds – with these slots certain symbols will disappear after the reels stop spinning. New symbols will ‘cascade’ or fall from the top to fill in the gaps. If they happen to make a new (winning) combination with the surrounding symbols, then you’ll receive (another payout), multiplier or bonus round. The best way to think of cascading wilds is like the games, bejeweled or tetris. The winning symbols will disappear, making room for new symbols to take it’s place. This can create a snowball effect where your winnings will compound if you get lucky and hit the right combination of symbols.
Stackable wilds – instead of having one wild per reel, giving you the opportunity to maybe win on 10 or 15 lines, stackable or stacked wilds will give you the opportunity to receive multiple wilds on any given real. ‘ways win’ slots – ways win slots are commonly seen/marketed as 243, 1024 or 3125 ways to win. Instead of using paylines, where you’re limited to 20, 50, 100, e tc paylines, combinations are created on a left to right basis, regardless of where a particular symbol is on a reel. So on the first reel you can have a symbol on the very top that will combine with a symbol on the very bottom of the next reel. Nudge and hold – slot machines with a nudge and hold feature give you the feeling of having more control. The premise to these features is simple. With the nudge feature you’re randomly given the opportunity to move a particular reel 1 position up or down. With the hold feature (also given at random), you’re able to ‘hold’ an entire reel while re-spinning the remaining reels. Either feature gives you a second opportunity to win (more).

The winning symbols tumble off the bottom of the screen and next symbols appear from the top of the screen to replace them. Be warned that tumbling reels usually come on slot machines with more paylines, which need to be played in order to trigger the maximum jackpot, so the chances of losing a lot of money are greater.

Many scatter icons trigger a bonus game. In many cases, three scatter symbols appearing on the reels at once activate a bonus game mode. In many cases, the more scatters appear (3,4,5), the bigger the multipliers on the bonus game mode.
Cascading reels – if you’re ever played games like tetris or gemix, then you are familiar with how cascading reels work. With the cascade effect, symbols that complete a winning combination “drop out” of the game screen and are replaced with new symbols. This, in turn, creates a new set of reel combinations. If the new alignment produces a winning combination, then the winning symbols drop off the screen and are replaced by new symbols. This continues until you no longer have a winning combination.
Cascading reels is popular with players, because it creates the “make-it, take-it” effect: players can string many wins together at once. Final thoughts on features
In fact, that’s why someone like myself will even bother to sit down to play one. I usually prefer to play games like poker or blackjack, because of the better house edge, dynamic situations and the (limited) control I have over the outcomes.
But I find video slots to be entertaining. They remind me of playing videos games. When the wife and I go to the casino I enjoy playing the dark knight (batman) machines. At it’s simplest, it plays scenes from the movie, and all the symbols are characters or props. That’s enough to keep my attention for a little while.
But what makes this game, and all video slots more fun, are the features. In the case of the dark knight machine, one bonus round would be racing the joker in your tumbler. These rounds would sometimes pop up at random, and at other times they’d be triggered by hitting a combination of symbols, usually with wild cards.

Bonus symbols
The initial aim of any slot game is to line up matching symbols which will lead to cash wins. That’s the base game explained but in most titles, there are bonus symbols. Their role is to take you to additional features and we will explain the options that are available as we move through this review.
At this stage, the important point to note is that bonus symbols exist and that we should identify them before we hit that spin button. At times, they may simply use the word ‘bonus’ or they may employ the game’s logo. Alternatively, the bonus may be a separate image that relates to the specific theme of the title.
Cascading reels
Cascading reels are sometimes referred to as tumbling reels but both terms relate to the same function. Slot games that carry this function will employ the feature on every winning spin. When a matching combo lands, the winning symbols will disappear and others will cascade into their place.
Essentially, when cascading reels appear on a slot machine, you’re enjoying a free respin every time a winning combination drops in.
Coins
The term ‘coins’ simply refers to the amount of money that you are using as a stake. The total sum that you are betting on each payline therefore equates to a certain number of coins.
Expanding wilds
Scroll down towards the end for a full explanation on how a wild symbol works. A standard wild occupies just one position on the reels but many games offer bonus features where that wild can behave a little differently.
Expanding wilds have the capacity to literally ‘expand’ and cover multiple positions on the reels. With more wilds, there is a greater possibility of landing a winning combination so this is a very useful feature to have.
Free spins
The vast majority of slot machines offer bonus rounds and free spins are among the most common features. As the name suggests, this is a section where a certain number of spins are awarded and no additional staking is made during the feature.
Free spins are usually triggered by bonus symbols known as scatters. A certain amount (usually three) will need to land on the reels for free spins to activate. Multipliers
Multipliers are symbols which will multiply your winnings by a set amount. For example, you may see a symbol appear on the reels with the figures x2 attached to it and this means that any wins will be doubled.
From there, x3, x4, x5 and higher multiples are in place in certain games.
Pay tables
A pay table is available for every slot game on unibet’s list and this will explain how much each symbol is worth. The tables should be clearly laid out with figures underlining the returns that you can expect, depending on how many of each symbol is matched across a payline.

Paylines
A payline is, quite simply, an invisible line across the reels, along which you need to match symbols in order to win cash prizes. Typically, paylines will be flat and horizontal but they can also be diagonal and can, on occasions, form in irregular patterns.
Slot wins are usually formed from left to right but on rare occasions, usually during bonus rounds, it may be possible to align from right to left as well. The exact number of paylines available should also be clearly shown in the game’s description and in our reviews.
Pick games
This is an additional feature found in certain slot machines and it will usually activate when three or more scatters have come into play. Once again, this bonus is self explanatory to an extent and when a pick game is triggered, players will be asked to make a selection from a set of images.
Free spins, multipliers, cash prizes and more could be waiting behind those symbols so this can be another lucrative aspect of slot machine play.
Progressive jackpots
Casino slot games will be equipped with two different kinds of jackpots. In the main, the maximum win is a set amount and will not change and this is known as a fixed or non-progressive jackpot.
The second of these is a progressive jackpot and this has the capacity to increase. In games such as mega moolah or megajackpots siberian storm, a percentage of each stake is taken and added to the prize fund. The big cash prize will continue to build until it’s won and this is referred to as a progressive jackpot.

The initials RTP stand for return to player and this is the percentage amount returned in winnings. The figure is measured over a minimum of 100,000 spins and has to be quantifiable under the rules of the UK gambling commission.

Scatters

Scatters are so called because they do not have to appear in a row across a payline. As long as the minimum number spin into view, they can literally be ‘scattered’ across the reels.
Shifting wilds
A shifting wild acts in a similar fashion to a sticky wild - see below. The one key difference is that a shifting wild will stay in place for just one spin before moving to another position on the reel sets.
Sticky wilds
Sticky wilds are occasionally referred to as locked wilds and they will remain in place on the reels for a sequence of spins. This will normally happen during a bonus feature - most typically when the free spins round comes along.
After each spin, any wilds that fall onto the reels will literally stick in place for the remainder of this bonus feature. As those wilds build, the higher the chances are of getting matching combinations and cash wins.
Stacked wilds
We’ve covered expanding wilds so now it’s time for their stacked counterparts. Stacked wilds can also move to occupy more places on the reels but, as the name suggests, they will stack and occupy extra positions on one reel only.
Wheel of fortune
In a sense, a wheel of fortune is similar to a pick game. This is a bonus feature that can occasionally appear in slot games with prizes up for grabs that may include cash wins, free spins and many more.
The only difference here is that, rather than select prizes that are hidden behind symbols, players will spin a wheel to reveal their rewards.
Wild symbols

For example, let’s say you are playing siberian storm and have two orange tiger symbols on the first two reels. That’s not enough for a win but if the wild spins into reel three, it will match and trigger a cash prize.
In general, the only symbols that wilds will not replace are scatters and other bonus icons. These are valuable options in their own right so it’s simply not in the players’ interests to have them substituted.

However, some slots may have bonus symbols that may need to be lined up instead on activated pay-lines before such a bonus game is awarded to players, and some have scatter symbols attached to selected reels which may need to be spun in all together via a single spins but free spins are triggered.
