Project status of hard rock casino tejon
The tejon indian tribe become a federally-recognized tribe in january 2012.
On august 3, 2015 the U.S. Bureau of indian affairs (BIA) issued a notice of intent that it was processing an application from the tejon indian tribe to transfer tejon indian land into federal trust for a proposed casino project. [source: federal register]
An environmental impact statement (EIS) was initiated by the BIA in august 2015 that required a scoping report followed by a draft EIS and a final EIS. [source: EIS]
The scoping report was completed february 22, 2019. The draft EIS is scheduled for completion in late 2019 and will be open for public comments.

Tejon's hard rock casino proposal wins kern county support
In a 4-0 vote the kern county board of supervisors approved a $218 million deal yesterday with the tejon indian tribe to provide public safety services a proposed casino south of bakersfield. The tribe would pay the county $218 million over 20 years for law enforcement, fire protection and other safety services .
The board's approval is an important milestone for the tejon indian tribe in its progress towards winning federal approval to construct a casino on its reservation.
Tejon tribe chairman octavio escobedo was pleased with the 4-0 vote and said, "this is a truly historic day for the tejon people. Everyone shares a vision of homeownership. This is our vision for a homeland."
The tejon casino will be branded and managed by hard rock international. It will be a 165,500-square-foot casino with a 400-room hotel and include 13 restaurants and a concert venue.
The U.S. Bureau of indian affairs is currently drafting an environment impact study. It will be presented to the U.S. Interior department next year for a decision on whether or not the hard rock tejon project should proceed.
Tejon indians and kern county seek casino agreement
The tejon indians have been negotiating an agreement with kern county administrative office for compensating the county for police and fire services needed at the proposed hard rock hotel & casino south of bakerfield.
In a tentative agreement the tribe would pay the county $218 million over 20 years, and it would be renogotiated beyond that.
The kern county board of supervisors will vote on the proposal during their july 23 session.
The plan includes a new sheriff and fire substation near the casino site, 13 new sheriff employees, 9 new fire employees and a gambling treatment program.

In a press release today the tejon indian tribe announced their signing with hard rock international to develop and manage their casino project south of bakersfield. Hard rock international is owned by the seminole tribe of florida.
The newly branded project is now the hard rock hotel & casino tejon.
The plans call for $600 million to construct a native american casino and hotel on a 306-acre parcel of farmland on the north side of highway 166 between I-5 and highway 99.
The hard rock hotel & casino tejon will include 13 restaurants and bars, a concert venue named hard rock live, a rock spa and fitness center, the largest conference center in kern county.
The timetable to the opening date is unknown. The next step toward federal approval will be completion of an environmental impact study later this year followed by a period for public review and comments. The results of that will determine if the bureau of indian affairs gives a green light to proceed with the project.

Casinos in southern california: list of indian casinos with slot machines & map
There are 24 casinos in southern california.
But while socal has 22 million people and roughly 60% of the state’s population, it’s home to just 39% of the state’s casinos.
There are a total of 66 casinos in california: 42 in northern california, and 24 in southern california, which we consider to be the ten most southern counties in the state.
To be more specific, we’re only count southern california casinos to be ones that are south of bakersfield.
We’re also only counting the more traditional, indian casinos.
We say this because in addition to the 24 casinos in southern california, there are numerous card rooms. Many of these even have the word “casino” in their name. However per california gaming control board regulations, they are not allowed to have slot machines, craps, etc.
These 24 indian casinos are all on tribal land, and they run the gamut from small joints to massive resorts.

Southern california casino expansions
In just the last few years, the southern california casino market has gotten larger, and is about to get even bigger.
The $400 million dollar jamul casino near san diego opened in december 2016, adding 1,700 slot machines and 40 table games to the busy san diego casino market.
Harrah’s resort southern california completed their $160 million dollar expansion in the fall of 2017, while a more recent $300 million dollar expansion of pechanga made one of the nation’s largest casinos even bigger.
Several other socal casinos have undergone recent expansions, or plan to do so.
The sycuan casino, for example, completed a $260 million dollar expansion in march of 2019 that added a 12 story 300 hotel room, along with 2,000 more parking spaces, restaurants, pools and 21,000 more square feet of gaming floor space.
Morongo casino resort and spa is completing an expansion of 65,000 more gaming square footage, which will add 800 more slot machines. This will be completed in the summer of 2020.
San manuel is still undergoing a half billion dollar plus expansion that includes a new hotel tower and entertainment venue. Everything is expected to be completed in the spring of 2021.
Brand new casinos in southern california
Soboba casino – san jacinto
The new casino/hotel replaced its tent structure with this 200 room resort in february 2019. It now boasts 2,000 slot machines, and 38 table games.
The cahuilla casino hotel – anza
While there has been gambling here for a while, the cahuilla casino is transforming from mostly a large prefabricated tent with just a few hundred slot machines and zero table games into a more contemporary casino. It will still be very small (14,000 square feet with 353 slot machines), but will now have a few table games, and a small hotel.
Agua caliente – cathedral city
This smaller casino is currently under construction. When opened sometime in early 2021, it will have 500 slot machines and eight table games.
And with the popularity and social acceptance of casino gambling expanding, we are bound to see new casinos pop up on this list in the near future.
