For that, you’ll have to go all the way south to tampa bay.
One hundred and ninety-seven miles to be exact, as the closest casino to jacksonville is the seminole hard rock hotel & casino tampa.
During normal traffic conditions, it would take you around 3 ½ hours to drive there, when going south on highway 301 then interstate 75.
It’s a long drive to be sure, however should you decide to go, you’ll find yourself at one of the top ten largest casinos in the united states.
The seminole hard rock tampa is a beautiful, newly remodeled hotel and spa resort that boasts over 200,000 square feet of gaming space filled with over 4,000 slot machines/video poker machines, and over 100 table games, not including their fancy new 47 seat poker room.

Jacksonville poker rooms & racing
While the region lacks a regular casino, jacksonville is blessed with two solid, popular poker rooms, both under the name “bestbet,” and both have betting on horses and greyhounds.
The bestbet jacksonville is just seven miles directly east of downtown jacksonville, while the bestbet orange park is 14 miles south. Both have restaurants and bars. You only have to be 18 to play, however you still do have to be 21 to drink.

Bestbet jacksonville
This is the larger of the two jacksonville area card rooms. In fact, it’s the largest poker room in the state of florida.
Their website boasts of a 20,000 square foot room with “88 table games” however I don’t believe all of those are poker tables. Many other poker sites put bestbet jacksonville’s poker table count at 70, so we’ll go with that. Either way, it’s good sized. They also run a variety of fun high hand promotions daily.
Games spread include the usual no-limit texas hold’em, along with a pot limit omaha hi-lo games, both of which range from $1/$2 games, up to $5/$10.
In addition, there are some very low-limit limit texas hold’em games, along with limit omaha 8 or better, and even a $1/$3 stud game.
Daily tournaments start at just $50 buy-ins, and the bestbet jacksonville has regularly hosted a main event stop on the world poker tour.
In addition to the 70-odd poker tables, the remaining 18 or so of the room’s 88 tables are casino table games like ultimate texas hold’em, pai gow, and both 1, 2, and 3 card poker games. Unlike table games you find at the hard rock in tampa, or in vegas-style casinos, players at these table games play against a designated “banker,” and all players get the opportunity to be a banker, should they wish.

Located 14 miles south of jacksonville in orange park, florida, this cardroom has had live greyhound racing on its track since the 1930’s. Due to a recent voter-passed initiative, live greyhound racing in the state of florida will end at the end of this year.
Regardless, bestbet orange park offers wagering on horse races and dog races in other areas via simulcast betting.
With 37 tables (including carnival games), this poker room is smaller than the bestbet jacksonville, however for you race bettors, that’s offset somewhat by being able to watch the dogs run live. The only active casino cruise ship line in the area is victory casino cruises down at port canaveral. They previously sailed out of jacksonville, out of mayport village, 18 miles east of downtown jacksonville, but relocated a few years back to port canaveral.
Casino boats operate legally by sailing out 3 miles offshore, into international waters, before turning on the slot machines and opening up the table games. Another twist is that unlike most land-based casinos in the united states, you only have to be 18 years or older to gamble on a casino cruise ship.
The victory casino cruise boat is 229 feet long and has 300 slot machines, and 17 table games, including blackjack, roulette, and craps. There’s also a sports book, a café, and three bars onboard.

TYPES OF CASINOS IN FLORIDA
There are three types of florida casinos: casino boats, indian casinos, and gaming machines at pari-mutuels in two south florida counties.
Casino boats
The casino boats in florida offer gamblers the opportunity to board ships that cruise offshore where casino gambling is legal. From the west coast the boats travel nine miles out into the gulf of mexico. From the east coast they travel three miles out into the atlantic ocean.
Indian casinos
There are eight florida indian casinos. The seminole tribe has seven and the eighth is on the miccosukee tribe’s reservation.
The seminoles signed a compact with the state that allows them to offer traditional class III gaming machines. As part of their compact, five seminole casinos are also allowed to offer blackjack, baccarat, mini-baccarat, three card poker, let it ride and pai gow poker.
All of the indian casinos are open 24 hours (except big cypress) and all offer bingo except for both seminole hard rock casinos and the seminole casino coconut creek. The minimum gambling age is 18 at all indian casinos for bingo or poker and 21 for electronic gaming machines.
Pari-mutuel casinos
There are eight pari-mutuel casinos in florida.
In early 2005 voters in broward county (home county of fort lauderdale) passed a referendum to allow slot machines at four pari-mutuel facilities within that county and all are now in operation..
In january 2008 voters in miami-dade county also passed a referendum permitting slot machines at four pari-mutuel facilities.

Disney and seminoles team up against casino expansion
A constitutional amendment that would change florida casino laws is being supported by both the seminole tribe of florida and disney worldwide services. This decision on the proposed change would happen this november.
On july 30 both the seminoles and disney gave the political committee, voters in charge, $10 million to give support in the constitutional amendment that would prevent the future of gaming expansion in the state. As of august 03, the committee had $20 million in cash. Since 2017 over $14.6 million has been contributed by disney to the group per the released finance records. $11.7 million has been given from the seminoles. Voters in charge has received 99 percent of their donations from these two groups.
Voters in charge is a nonprofit political group. The amount of required signatures needed to place the measure on the november ballot were collected from the group.
The proposed bill is known as amendment 3. It is also known as the voter control of gambling amendment. In order for it to pass, 60 percent of the voters would need to be in favor of the measure. Amendment 3 would give the voters the right to authorize and decide on future gaming expansion. The legislature and the governor would not have as much power over the decision over how many and what types of games would be allowed.
The seminoles are supporting the amendment in order to prevent slot machines from being installed and operated in eight counties. Currently only florida tribal owned casinos and casinos in broward and miami-dade counties are the only legal areas for slot machines to be in operation.
$300 million is being paid annually to the state by the seminoles as part of an arrangement that would prevent other counties from offering slot gaming.
Seminole tribe casinos will stop using plastic straws
Six of the florida casinos owned by the seminole tribe of florida will stop the use of plastic straws.
The change will be put into effect on september 01. The plastic straws will be replaced by drinking straws that are more eco-friendly. Bags that are for to go meals will be replaced by paper bags as well at the florida casinos. This will occur by the middle of august.
The casinos that will be making these changes are the seminole hard rock hotel & casino tampa, the seminole casino immokalee, the seminole casino immokalee, and the seminole casino immokalee. Also, both hollywood located casinos. The seminole hard rock hotel & casino hollywood, the seminole classic casino.
Biodegradable containers are currently in use at the restaurants owned by seminole gaming. The containers are used for to go food and are reusable and recyclable.
Seminole gaming and the seminole tribe of florida are striving to make a conscientious effort in their practices of sustainability.
This has been on a trend of other large companies vowing to be more ecofriendly and removing plastic straws and plastic stirrers for drinks.
Starbucks, marriott international, and royal caribbean have also recently made the choice to remove plastic straws. So have tourist destinations like sea world, busch gardens, and walt disney world.
All five city commissioners for hallandale beach have given approval for a plastic straw citywide ban. On september 05 a second vote will be made on the ban. If approved this will be the first city in broward county to outlaw plastic straws
Seminole tribe reaches card-slots compact agreement with state
A new gaming compact has been agreed upon between the state of florida and the seminole tribe. Under the new compact the state will receive $300 million. The tribe will have exclusive rights to slot machines and table games.
A lawsuit had been ongoing over previous compact. The tribe sued the state over a breach of compact. Florida had allowed for other gaming venues that were not owned by the seminole's to operate certain games. Last year the state submitted a counter lawsuit against the tribe. The new compact ends the litigation.
After the 2017 lawsuit, the tribe stopped playing the state the taxes that were agreed upon in the previous compact. Instead, the money was placed into an escrow account. Over time, the account grew to $120 million. That money will be paid out as part of the agreed upon $300 million to the state.
The $300 million payment will ensure that the tribe will have exclusive gaming rights. After may 2019, the payments will end. This will take place at the end of the legislative session.
Much of the money that is paid to the state from the gaming revenue funds environmental and education programs. Under the new gaming compact, payments from the tribe will go to the florida department of business and professional regulation.
The newly agreed upon gaming compact will be in effect until 2030.
Currently seminole hard rock casinos are investing over $2.4 billion into two locations. Those expansions are taking place in hollywood and in tampa. Construction jobs and permanent positions after the projects are complete will create thousands of jobs.
Voting will take place this november to determine if the state legislature or the residents of florida should decide on the future of gaming expansion in the state.

Disney and seminoles team up against casino expansion
A constitutional amendment that would change florida casino laws is being supported by both the seminole tribe of florida and disney worldwide services. This decision on the proposed change would happen this november.
On july 30 both the seminoles and disney gave the political committee, voters in charge, $10 million to give support in the constitutional amendment that would prevent the future of gaming expansion in the state. As of august 03, the committee had $20 million in cash. Since 2017 over $14.6 million has been contributed by disney to the group per the released finance records. $11.7 million has been given from the seminoles. Voters in charge has received 99 percent of their donations from these two groups.
Voters in charge is a nonprofit political group. The amount of required signatures needed to place the measure on the november ballot were collected from the group.
The proposed bill is known as amendment 3. It is also known as the voter control of gambling amendment. In order for it to pass, 60 percent of the voters would need to be in favor of the measure. Amendment 3 would give the voters the right to authorize and decide on future gaming expansion. The legislature and the governor would not have as much power over the decision over how many and what types of games would be allowed.
The seminoles are supporting the amendment in order to prevent slot machines from being installed and operated in eight counties. Currently only florida tribal owned casinos and casinos in broward and miami-dade counties are the only legal areas for slot machines to be in operation.
$300 million is being paid annually to the state by the seminoles as part of an arrangement that would prevent other counties from offering slot gaming.
Seminole tribe casinos will stop using plastic straws
Six of the florida casinos owned by the seminole tribe of florida will stop the use of plastic straws.
The change will be put into effect on september 01. The plastic straws will be replaced by drinking straws that are more eco-friendly. Bags that are for to go meals will be replaced by paper bags as well at the florida casinos. This will occur by the middle of august.
The casinos that will be making these changes are the seminole hard rock hotel & casino tampa, the seminole casino immokalee, the seminole casino immokalee, and the seminole casino immokalee. Also, both hollywood located casinos. The seminole hard rock hotel & casino hollywood, the seminole classic casino.
Biodegradable containers are currently in use at the restaurants owned by seminole gaming. The containers are used for to go food and are reusable and recyclable.
Seminole gaming and the seminole tribe of florida are striving to make a conscientious effort in their practices of sustainability.
This has been on a trend of other large companies vowing to be more ecofriendly and removing plastic straws and plastic stirrers for drinks.
Starbucks, marriott international, and royal caribbean have also recently made the choice to remove plastic straws. So have tourist destinations like sea world, busch gardens, and walt disney world.
All five city commissioners for hallandale beach have given approval for a plastic straw citywide ban. On september 05 a second vote will be made on the ban. If approved this will be the first city in broward county to outlaw plastic straws
Seminole tribe reaches card-slots compact agreement with state
A new gaming compact has been agreed upon between the state of florida and the seminole tribe. Under the new compact the state will receive $300 million. The tribe will have exclusive rights to slot machines and table games.
A lawsuit had been ongoing over previous compact. The tribe sued the state over a breach of compact. Florida had allowed for other gaming venues that were not owned by the seminole's to operate certain games. Last year the state submitted a counter lawsuit against the tribe. The new compact ends the litigation.
After the 2017 lawsuit, the tribe stopped playing the state the taxes that were agreed upon in the previous compact. Instead, the money was placed into an escrow account. Over time, the account grew to $120 million. That money will be paid out as part of the agreed upon $300 million to the state.
The $300 million payment will ensure that the tribe will have exclusive gaming rights. After may 2019, the payments will end. This will take place at the end of the legislative session.
Much of the money that is paid to the state from the gaming revenue funds environmental and education programs. Under the new gaming compact, payments from the tribe will go to the florida department of business and professional regulation.
The newly agreed upon gaming compact will be in effect until 2030.
Currently seminole hard rock casinos are investing over $2.4 billion into two locations. Those expansions are taking place in hollywood and in tampa. Construction jobs and permanent positions after the projects are complete will create thousands of jobs.
Voting will take place this november to determine if the state legislature or the residents of florida should decide on the future of gaming expansion in the state.
